Baphomet: Guidance over Idolatry
A cautionary explanation of the meaning of Baphomet nowadays as told through the eyes of a modern eclectic witch.
Illya Burke

Baphomet
In recent years, the figure Baphomet has gained prominence, often seen as a dark icon in various occult and alternative spiritual circles. While its multifaceted symbolism offers intelligent insights, there's this dumbass following of persons that have opted to literally worship Baphomet instead. Rigorously transforming it into a deity rather than a symbol that embodies philosophical ideas. This willful misguidance perpetuates the stigma surrounding occultic communities, because they're worshipping the symbolism and partaking in heinous acts to 'prove authenticity'. That's just downright insipid! Thanks a lot. I don't know wtf is so hard to understand! Some folks just have a knack for complicating everything, evidently.
I'm going to dissect this silly ass "phenomenon", examining how such misinterpretations can detract from the deep tapestry of meanings originally intended by esoteric thinkers like Eliphas Levi and Aleister Crowley. Since its inception to kingdom come, Baphomet will remain a compelling figure that invites exploration, so it's vital to approach it with the awareness that its value lies in its symbolism rather than in idolization. Engaging with Baphomet symbolism through the lens of its historical and philosophical roots—as envisioned by Levi.
Origins...
Historically, Baphomet was introduced into popular culture during the 19th century, largely through the work of French occultist Éliphas Lévi, who depicted the figure as a winged humanoid with goat-like features. But if you dig deeper, (like waaaay back) "occultists/pagans" gravitated to the figure of Pan— who has been largely overshadowed by later interpretations and representations of deities associated with darkness and chaos, particularly in the context of Western esotericism and Christian demonology.
The historical amnesia surrounding Pan is indicative of broader trends in how societies navigate the remnants of their pagan past. By eclipsing figures like Pan, contemporary discussions about spirituality and the divine often overlook the richness and diversity of pre-Christian belief systems. Instead, these narratives contribute to a binary understanding of good and evil—where figures like Pan are relegated to the shadows, serving as a cautionary tale against the allure of the untamed aspects of nature and human experience.
Remember, Pan, always shown depicted as a half-goat, half-man creature, embodies the spirit of wild and natural instinct which included sexual liberation. His connection to fertility and nature made him a symbol of uninhibited joy and vitality. But we all know as Christianity rose to prominence, figures like Pan were demonized. The church, seeking to eradicate all other beliefs, reinterpreted these ancient symbols through monotheistic writers, casting them in a negative light.
This depiction by Christians was meant to represent an anti-godhead serving as an emblem of opposition. Ironically, Eliphas' display of opposites on Baphomet such as male and female, good and evil, symbolizes the balance inherent in nature and the universe, conveying the idea of synthesis rather than division.
Aleister and Baphomet...
Aleister Crowley, perhaps one of the most controversial figures in modern occultism, recognized Baphomet as a powerful symbol within his own system of beliefs—Thelema. Crowley viewed Baphomet not as a being to be adored, but as an archetype that represented the 'True Will' and the union of the spiritual and material worlds. For Crowley, idolizing Baphomet undermined its significance. I'm gonna go ahead and reiterate: (ahem) ELIPHAS LEVI, THE BAPHOMET CREATOR, emphasized understanding and interpretation over literal worship.
In turn, Crowley’s writings encourage adherents to seek personal enlightenment rather than adhere to dogmatic doctrines. Through this lens (the intended one), it's clear that Baphomet is meant to be a guide rather than an object of adoration. Those who elevate Baphomet into a god-like idol obscure its deeper meanings, reducing a complex symbol into a simplistic figure of devotion.
Trending Worship...
Despite this rich historical background, a segment of contemporary occult practitioners appears to embrace Baphomet in a more literal sense, treating it as a deity worthy of worship. This approach can be seen as symptomatic of a broader trend where fictional superficial interpretations dominate, often driven by pop culture and shock value rather than informed understanding.
This trend raises questions about the motivations behind such practices. Are these individuals genuinely seeking spiritual fulfillment, or are they simply drawn to the aesthetic appeal and rebellious connotations associated with Baphomet? In many cases, the allure seems to stem more from its status as a countercultural symbol than from any serious engagement with its philosophical implications.
Consequences of Idolization...
Idolizing Baphomet may provide a temporary thrill or a sense of belonging within certain groups. However, it risks misrepresenting the nuances of the original teachings and the complexities of the human experience they were designed to explore. By treating Baphomet like a rockstar, individuals may inadvertently limit their understanding and reduce a rich tradition to a shallow form of sensationalism.
In closing, it's good practice to implement the ideals of Baphomet by restoring Pan to the conversation. In doing so, it invites a reevaluation of our relationship with nature and the instinctual facets of humanity. It challenges the paradox imposed by religious doctrines and reminds us of the complexity inherent in these ancient symbols. Acknowledging Pan's significance offers an even richer understanding of spirituality, mythology and the ways in which we interpret and respect the natural worlds opposing forces throughout history up until today and onward.
